Are you facing the challenge of decorating a small bedroom? Don’t let limited space limit your creativity! Small bedrooms can be transformed into cosy havens with the right design approach. Whether you’re dealing with a snug apartment or a compact guest room, we’ve got you covered with some ingenious bedroom ideas to make the most out of every inch. Discover tips on getting started and efficiently planning out your small space!

Step 1:

When planning the design of your compact bedroom, the initial step is to compile a checklist of all the essentials you require in your space to ensure thoughtful consideration of each item’s spatial requirements. Consider factors such as the amount of wardrobe space necessary, whether drawers are more practical than wardrobe compartments, which items you wish to showcase, and whether a dedicated makeup area is needed or if the bathroom suffices. Additionally, evaluate if a desk is necessary. By asking yourself these questions, you can determine what elements are essential for your bedroom and what can be omitted.

Step 1:

Step 2:

After you have decided what needs to be in your room, sketch your bedroom floor plan. On a separate piece of paper draw your essential furnishings to scale—such as the bed, wardrobe, TV, etc and cut them out. Experiment with various configurations by moving the drawn furniture pieces around on top of the plan, determining the most optimal setup for your space. Once you’ve settled on the best configuration, explore the possibility of incorporating smart storage and design solutions, outlined below, to help with your design deliberations.

Step 2:

Multifunctional Furniture

Opt for furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes. A loft bed with built-in storage or a console table or bedside cabinet that doubles as a desk can help maximise space while adding functionality to your room. Consider an ottoman bed with drawers underneath for extra storage or a fold-out desk that can be tucked away when not in use. You can even convert a wardrobe to incorporate a concealed desk – essentially creating a “cloffice” (closet office).

Optimise Vertical Space:

When floor space is limited, look up! Install shelves or wall-mounted organisers to utilise vertical space for storage. Floating shelves above the bed or a tall bookshelf can provide storage without taking up valuable floor space. Hang curtains closer to the ceiling to create the illusion of height and make the room feel more spacious.

Optimise Vertical Space:

Create Illusions Of Space

Light colours can make a small bedroom feel more open and airy. However, this doesn’t mean you should shy away from darker hues; instead, embrace them wisely. A new concept called “colour drenching” advocates painting everything in the room—walls, ceiling, door, skirting boards, and architraves—in the same colour, creating the illusion of spaciousness and trust me it works!

Incorporating reflective surfaces like mirrors, glossy finishes, and metallic accents can further amplify the brightness and expansiveness of the room. Remember: when positioning a mirror, ensure it maximises its potential by reflecting a window or a source of light, rather than placing it against a plain wall, which adds little value to the room and can make it feel flat.

To enhance the perception of space, opt for furniture with legs or without legs, as opposed to pieces that directly rest on the floor. The more floor space you can see more spacious it will feel! Keeping the room clutter-free and avoiding oversized furniture is key to preventing the space from feeling cramped. Additionally, applying a glossy finish to the ceiling can help to visually elevate the room.

Get Creative with Storage Solutions:

Think outside the box when it comes to storage solutions. Utilise the space under the bed for storage bins or invest in a storage ottoman that can hold extra blankets or pillows. Hang hooks on the back of the door or pegs on the wall for coats and bags, and use decorative baskets or bins to confine clutter on shelves or in closets.

Get Creative with Storage Solutions:

Let There Be Light:

Good lighting is essential in any bedroom, especially a small one. Maximise natural light by keeping window treatments minimal and opting for sheer curtains that allow sunlight to filter through. Supplement with task lighting such as bedside lamps or wall sconces for reading, and consider installing dimmer switches to adjust the ambiance to your liking.

Let There Be Light:

With these small bedroom ideas, you can transform even the tiniest of spaces into a stylish and functional retreat. By embracing creativity, maximising storage, and prioritising comfort, you can make your small bedroom feel like a cosy sanctuary.
